Health Conditions Helped by Somatics

A partial list of disorders that respond well to Clinical Somatic Education — with some improving or resolving completely in just a few sessions. Explore these topics (in short lists, more detail, or picture grids) to learn more about the science and approach used in addressing a disorder. Contact us to learn more.

Spinal Stenosis

Tendonitis

Tendons are straps or bands of tissue that attach muscle to bone. As such, tendons are passive and do not get tight by themselves; they get tight when attached muscles tighten and shorten. Tendinitis (or tendonitis) occurs when a muscle stays tight for long periods, as happens when protective reflexes get activated by injury. Strain on the tendon and friction of the tendon on surrounding tissue irritate the tendon and lead to inflammation and pain: tendonitis

Frozen Shoulder / Adhesive Capsulitis

Sometimes interchanged with the term "frozen shoulder", adhesive capsulitis is the adhesion of the joint capsule to the bones of the shoulder joint. While this condition may cause scarring or other degradation of tissues of the shoulder, Clinical Somatics can help to restore the movement of the shoulder in a safe, non-invasive, and gentle way that allows for mobility and healing of the joint with long-lasting results. Most importantly, Somatics can address the functional issues that led to the condition to begin with, and prevent it from happening again.

Dizziness

There is a very intricate relationship between the movement of the eyes, the balancing organs of the inner ear, the musculature of the entire skeleton, the proprioceptive sense organs of the body, and the brain centers that equate and manage all of these factors.

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear and inflammation of joints, especially weight bearing joints. Arthritis is generally viewed as normal degradation due to aging, overuse, and misuse of the body. The question we ask is "does this degradation need to occur, and if it already has, what can be done to reverse it?" The answer is usually "no, it does not need to occur and, if it already has, often there is hope that you can make it better."

Bursitis

Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, the fluid filled sacks that cushion points of contact between tendons, ligaments, and bones. Especially prevalent in the shoulder and knee joints, bursitis can cause pain upon movement, heat, swelling, and limited mobility. The term is often used as a general description for shoulder pain where the cause is unclear and is generally thought to occur from misuse.

Headaches

Many headaches, including tension, sinus, and migraine types, are alleviated through Clinical Somatics by the lessening of habituated muscular tension of the neck and jaw muscles, shoulders, and back.

Tension in the neck can cause great pressure on the connective tissue around the skull, as well as the blood pressure sensors, vascular system, and nerves that innervate the head and neck.
