Right here on Hampshire's campus, the Yiddish Book center is the world's only museum and book center devoted solely to Yiddish literature.

Another museum located right on Hampshire's campus, the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is slated to open in November 2002. The museum will feature the art of Eric Carle, author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and many other nationally and internationally acclaimed picture book artists.

The Pratt Museum houses a number of collections and exhibits of fossils, animals, minerals, geologic phenomena, and anthropological artifacts. The objects in the museum have been collected since the 1830s.

The Mead Art Museum is located on the campus of Amherst College and has a collection of more than 14,000 pieces of art.

Unfortunately, the museum is closed until early 2003 for renovations, though prgrams are still running during this time. Check the website for details.

The collection comprises more than 11,000 objects from antiquity to the present day, with concentrations in Asian art, Renaissance painting, American and European sculpture and painting, decorative arts, and works on paper.

Though located a bit of a distance from Hampshire's campus, about 60 miles northwest of Amherst in North Adams, MassMoCA is worth the trip. Housed in an historical mill complex, the museum prides itself as a multi-disciplinary center for visual, performing and media arts. Exhibitions and performances are constantly changing, so there is always something new to see at MassMoCA.
