The Somatic Systems Institute was founded in 1993 in Amherst, Massachusetts to bring awareness of Dr. Thomas Hanna's work to fellow health care professionals and clients all over the northeast. After SSI had established satellite practices in Manhattan (1995) and Providence, Rhode Island (1999), Dr. Hanna's widow – Eleanor Criswell, Ed.D. of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training – conferred the honor of making the Somatic Systems Institute the first and only practitioner training program outside of California.

After establishing itself as the leading national resource center for Somatics, Somatic Systems Institute acheived the honor of becoming the first and only practitioner training program after Thomas Hanna's.
SSI continues its 17-year tradition of helping to improve the quality of both health care and education by offering summer development sessions of the highest caliber and integrity. Taught by licensed instructors who are senior practitioners and experts in the field, our training program also includes free support services and consultations throughout the year to ensure understanding and mastery of this exciting field.
