Florence is approximately one mile from the downtown Northampton, further west along Main Street, which is also called Route 9.
Here's a link to the Google map for our address. This will not only show you a street view of what the building looks like, but also allows you to enter your starting address and it will give you directions.

When facing the front of the building, the office door is to the right. Once you enter the building, go down the half-flight of stairs, open the door to the ground floor hallway, and you will find our office at the end of the short hallway on the right.
Here are some local directions in case the internet doesn't give you what you need:
- Northampton, MA is reached from the north or south via I-91.
- Exit I-91 at Exit 18 / Northampton
- Travel north on Route 5 to the intersection of Route 5 (also called Pleasant Street at that point) & Main Street
- Turn left/west on to Main St / Route 9
- Head west on Route 9 for about 2 miles
- You will be in Florence center (Florence is a village within Northampton).
- Our building will be on the right/north,
- just past a market called Cooper's Corner,
- and just before a Cumberland Farms convenience store and gas station.
- In front of the building is a sign listing a dentist's office at top and then Somatic Systems Institute below that.
Parking
Parking is a lot easier in Florence than downtown Northampton: Most on-street parking is free (downtown, everything is metered). Additionally, our Florence office has a small parking lot in front of it, where you may be able to find available spots.
Classroom Attire
Please feel free to come to class dressed comfortably. You will be working with classmates as clients, and taking the role of clients for your classmates. You may wish to wear clothes that you would wear when participating in a Somatics Exercise class in your regular life. Typically, this means loose fitting pants and shirts and/or other attire that allows you to move comfortably and without significant restriction; and that does not impede either client or practitioner from feeling tactile feedback. (Denim jeans are usually problematic, for example.) This is a two-way street: It is important for you as a practitioner and exerciser to be able to learn, explore, and perform at your best; and it is fair to your classmates to be available as a fully mobile client. Remember to be considerate with your hygiene — keeping your body and breath free of excessive odor (including perfumes) and wearing clean socks and other clothing. Just as you should wear clothing that allows you to move without discomfort for you or your classmates (e.g., no skirts or dresses), because your classmates will be moving your legs and feet during practice times, you should pack enough socks to wear them to class everyday. If you have any questions about class attire, please call or email us for assistance.
Classroom Logistics
Be sure to take care of yourself: There will be breaks but they may not coincide with your thirst, so you might want to bring a water bottle, to stay comfortable and hydrated without having to leave the discussion and miss anything. If you are someone who needs to snack periodically, we recommend you bring something(s). Our preference is that you snack, etc. on your breaks, but if you absolutely do need to snack during class, please make it something that will not make a mess or noise during class. You can also easily buy beverages & snacks (healthy or junk food!) even right next door.
Florence center is not quite the densely packed and vital cultural center as Northampton's main downtown, but it does have several places to eat or buy food, including a local coffee shop, a world famous dinner straight out of the 1950's, a Friendly's, a Subway, a vegan cafe, and two casual family restaurants with pizza and various other meals. Right next to the classroom building is a well-established and popular local market, Cooper's Corner, that has a mix of traditional and some healthy foods; they have a very popular deli and a modest but well-priced salad bar. Nearby is a good Chinese restaurant, and of course downtown Northampton is only about a mile away.
You may only have about an hour or a little less for lunch, so plan accordingly.
Please let us know if you have any questions or need assistance.
We look forward to working with you!
