Noreen discovered Somatics when she had both upper and lower back pain, achy legs, painful feet, tight shoulders, and numbness in her arms…symptoms that all manifested during a particularly stressful time in her life. She initially sought the help of a chiropractor, starting with several times a week, with some relief, but new pains kept emerging. She began getting deep tissue massages once a week in an effort to relieve her discomfort, but again, found the relief to be very temporary. It was with frustration that she finally told a massage therapist about her lack of ability to achieve physical comfort, and he handed her the book, Somatics: Reawakening the Mind's Control of Movement, Flexibility and Health, by Thomas Hanna. She read the book and it made perfect sense to her - our brain responds to the day-to-day stress of life by contracting muscles, and when muscles become chronically contracted, we experience tension, aches and pain. She did the exercises outlined in the book and experienced immediate relief. She went online to find out more about Somatics, and found they were offering their first East Coast training.
Noreen has a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and a Masters in Education. Her teaching experience was with adult learners.
