Frequently Asked Questions - Clinical Somatic Education Technical Details

How is Clinical Somatic Education related to the Alexander Technique?

Clinical Somatic Education utilizes some of the techniques originally set forth by the originator of the Alexander Technique, F. Mathais Alexander. There is a strong component of learning how to feel and sense tension, and a period of becoming ‘reaccustomed’ to new sequences of movement once tension has been eliminated. However, there are two additional techniques which set Clinical Somatic Education apart.

The first technique is a method of ‘tricking’ the body to release tension in order to allow more movement to take place during a session. The second technique is an active movement initiated by the client, which, when combined with specific feedback from the practitioner, can actually recalibrate the level of resting tonus in a particular muscle. It is this active, focused participation of the client which creates a clear distinction between CSE and other modalities.

Isn't Clinical Somatic Education just Feldenkrais with a different name?

While Clinical Somatic Education stems directly from the amazing work created by Moshe Feldenkrais, there are some important distinctions which set CSE apart. After studying with Feldenkrais, Dr. Thomas Hanna went on to study the neurophysiological underpinnings of movement, and began to apply that knowledge to Feldenkrais' work. The result was a system of treatment that combined the intuitive, client-centered approach that Feldenkrais taught, with organized, scientifically based approaches and techniques which resulted in reduced treatment time and longer lasting effects for clients.

Clinical Somatic Education draws directly from Dr. Hanna's work, while integrating Feldenkrais' focus on experiential learning of anatomy and kinesiology, and of being "in tune" with your client. As a practitioner, you will be guided by your internal sensations, your intuition of movement, and your deep understanding of the physiological and neurophysiological systems that are preventing your client from moving freely. You will work within three main protocols, which will serve as a solid foundation for you to unravel even the most complicated patterns of chronic tension.

Additionally, Clinical Somatic Education uses a specialized technique that is not used in Feldenkrais' method. In this technique, the client initiates a slow, controlled movement and is given specific feedback from the practitioner. This combination of focused movement combined with specific feedback can actually recalibrate the resting tonus of a particular muscle, eliminating postural distortions and years of chronic pain.
